International Commerce Center in Hong Kong by Bret Oliver

When heading to South America, Central America, or the Caribbean, many travelers are accustomed to flying out of the Miami International Airport. However, if you look about 20 miles north to the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, you can find a great alternative that may save you time and money on your next international trip.

Shorter Lines

Anyone who has flown internationally through the Miami Airport can attest to the long immigration and security lines that at times can take hours to pass. This wait time makes it very difficult to arrange connecting flights and usually makes for a frustrating and sometimes hectic travel experience.

While these occurrences are similar at most large international airports, a fortunate alternative can be found in the smaller Fort Lauderdale airport. I have flown internationally through the Fort Lauderdale airport over 5 times in the past year and can attest the shorter security and immigration lines that are found at the Fort Lauderdale airport. Even though the immigration and security processes seem very similar, the attention of the staff to moving people through the process smoothly helps to reduce the overall time for the traveler. Additionally, some reduction in time is due to the much smaller international volume that travels through this airport.

Less Distance between Stops

Whether you need to jockey between terminals, need to obtain a rental car, or need to reach your car in one of the parking lots, you will find the time and distance between locations at the Fort Lauderdale airport very reasonable.

Courtesy shuttles are available between terminals, parking lots, and hotels. Stops are located conveniently near exits and the average wait time for a shuttle is around 5 minutes.

Friendlier Staff

One of the more striking differences between the Miami International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale airport is the friendliness of the staff. From security to the cleaning staff, I have found employees at the Fort Lauderdale airport to be extremely helpful and friendly.

For example, I was having difficulties moving my luggage along with my 14-month son in his stroller. A staff member saw my difficulty and offered to help, even though she was obviously on her break. When I offered her a tip once I reached my terminal, she declined and said to spend it on my child instead.

Less Cost

Flying Internationally through the Fort. Lauderdale airport could cost you significantly less than flying through the Miami international airport because of the availibility of low cost carriers. For connecting flights, Fort Lauderdale offers many flights by Southwest Airlines. Southwest offers great deals, especially if you are able to book at least 21 days in advance and they do not charge extra for checked luggage.

For international flights, the Fort Lauderdale airport is Spirit Airline's hub. At least once a week, Spirit Airlines offers incredibly low prices on their website. I have seen international prices as low as $11 each way plus tax. Spirit airlines does charge extra for baggage, but the cost is comparable to other airlines. Additionally, if you are flying internationally with a child under the age of 2, Spirit Airlines does not require you to buy an extra seat for the child as long as they are a 'lap child'. You may get charged tax for the child's trip, but it is significantly less than the cost of an additional seat. Most other airlines require the purchase of a separate seat for a child under 2 for international flights.

Conclusion

Overall, the Fort Lauderdale International airport provides convenience at a lower cost for international travelers. So, next time you are looking to fly to the Caribbean, South or Central America, check out the Fort Lauderdale airport for a less stressful international flying experience.
